Summer Movie Series

Join us August 2021 for 4 films that celebrate diversity.

“An American Ascent” – This documentary shares the adventure of the first African-American expedition to tackle North America’s highest peak, Denali. In only a few decades, the United States will become a majority-minority nation, as people of color will outnumber today’s white majority for the first time. Yet, a staggering number of people in this soon-to-be majority do not consider the outdoors as a place for them. By taking on the grueling 20,310 ft peak of the continent’s biggest mountain, 9 African-American climbers set out to shrink the “adventure gap” by building a legacy of inclusion in the outdoor/adventure community.  66 minutes.  Suitable for youth with parental discretion for mild profanity.

Documentary “PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in School.”  March 16th

Black high school girls are 6x more likely to be suspended, 2x more likely to receive corporal punishment, and 3x more likely to be restrained than white female students.  Our girls deserve better.  This documentary confronts the ways in which the misunderstanding of black girlhood has led to excessive punitive discipline which in turn disrupts one of the  most important factors in their lives: their education. Join us for a film screening and conversation via Zoom on Tuesday, March 16th at 2:00pm or 7:00pm.  This event is hosted by Tigard United Methodist Church.  Advance registration is required.

Pastor Casey will be leading a 5-session Lenten small group beginning Feb 21, on Sundays at 7:00pm via Zoom.

Participants will need to enroll in the online course “You Are Here: First Steps for White Christians on Race and Racism from the United Methodist General Commission on Religion and Race.  The course will explore the birth of “race,” how racism is defined, how racial identity and race shapes us, and how an “I don’t see color” approach isn’t the solution to racism. The registration fee is $39.99–please contact Pastor Casey if you need a scholarship to cover the registration costs.

The first small group Zoom gathering will be an introduction to the course.  After the first gathering, participants will have readings and activities to do from the online curriculum during the week before the next Zoom gathering.  Please email pastorcasey@newbergfumc.org to let Pastor Casey know if you plan to attend or have additional questions about the course.
